THE BEST OF BRAZILIAN FILMS

November 3-6, 2022
Bio Oko

KINO BRASIL IN FULL FORCE AGAIN IN BIO OKO!

After an unexpectedly demanding past year spent mainly online, we are returning to Bio Oko. A large screen showing exceptional films; a touch of the tropics in Prague in November, and the unique atmosphere of the cinema, for making this a fantastic event and serving great drinks. The eight edition of Kino Brasil is coming from November 4th to 7th. We can’t wait!

With this year's selection of films, as with previous years, we aim for the best of Brazilian cinema from recent years. Great feelings, courageous actions, sensuality and despair will be brought to life in enchanting scenes. We will visit forest homes, as well as small rooms in the city's apartment buildings. We will be showcasing relational and personal dramas; a crazy film with a deep metaphor; a documentary from the contemporary Amazon; and a brand-new animated movie for the whole family. “It is not easy for art in today Brazil, including filmmaking. To make an independent film has become a great challenge, and any such action requires courage and support from abroad. These challenges create distinctive films that score high at the world's most prestigious festivals and prove that Brazilian filmmakers are not here to give up,” said programme manager Gabriela Šmaiclová.

Kino Brasil will offer six films on various themes and approaches from contemporary leading Brazilian directors. All screenings will be preceded by short introductions and all films will be screened with Czech and English subtitles. In the programme, you will find the Cannes-awarded drama Invisible Life. The story of two separated sisters from Rio de Janeiro in the 1960s that had already broke many hearts. The documentary The Last Forest, awarded in Berlin, focusses on the distressing call made by a handful of indigenous people for their place in the world of today. The imaginary barriers between generations formed by the time in which we live is the topic of the film Rend Your Heart, in which boundless fatherly love is as tangible as is its pain. Animation inspired by the famous painter of the Brazilian modernist era Tarsila do Amaral, Tarsilinha opens a mysterious door to a Brazilian fairy tale world.

KINO BRASIL PROJECT

Kino Brasil is organised by Saudade, an association of enthusiasts who fell in love with Brazil. For eight years we have been closely following Brazilian cinematography and have been carefully choosing the best films to screen in November at the cinema Bio Oko. We try to present the films in the broader context of Brazilian culture, gastronomy and political-economic situations.
