"I think about one day organizing a Czech Film Festival in Brazil" says Carol, a new team member of Kino Brasil.

This time around, we spoke with the other Brazilian in the team, the most recent project addition, Carol. See what she has to say about her experience and the festival,

[Adilson] How come you came to live in the Czech Republic? What do you do for a living?

[Carol] After I finished my master's degree in language, I decided it was time to explore the world, leave Brazil behind for a little while, and have an international experience. I sent my resume everywhere, from Singapore to Romania. Luckily, the first response I got came from the Czech Republic. So, in a way, we can say that this country chose me. What was supposed to be just one year ended up becoming five, so I've been here all this time working as a language teacher.

[Adilson] As the newest contributor to the Team Kino Brasil, tell me how is it that you joined the team? How do you like it so far?

[Carol] I've been attending Kino Brasil since I moved here, but this year I decided to take that relationship to the next level. So, I sent a message on social media to see what would happen. To my surprise, the team was very receptive and welcoming, and I was really happy with their vote of confidence. I always imagined that organizing a festival of this size would be difficult, but I didn’t know it would be this much. However, all the other team members are a great inspiration because I see how much they dedicate themselves to making everything work out. I hope my contribution is up to the task!

[Adilson] You are, as many of us are also, a movie lover. Tell us about your relationship with cinema – it should be quite interesting for our blog readers.

[Carol] In Brazil, a group of friends and I used to organize a film club where we screened Italian comedies at a historic cinema in our city. So, I was already somewhat familiar with the challenges (and pleasures) of organizing events and attracting an audience. I would even make popcorn at home and bring it to distribute for free during the screenings to ensure a complete experience for the viewers.

I'm also very enthusiastic about Czech cinema. I think about one day organizing a Czech film festival in Brazil, so why not start by doing the exact opposite?

[Adilson] Describe what is it that you’re doing with the team. How are you helping us out? Do you feel welcomed?

[Carol] Since this is my first year and I'm still trying to figure out my role in all of this, I'm trying to do a bit of everything, from updating our website to handing out flyers in cafés and bars. The most challenging part for me has been being more active on Facebook and Instagram, as I've always been more private on social media. But I'm learning a lot, and the whole team has always gone out of their way to answer my questions and help me understand the process.

[Adilson] What movie are you most excited about to watch? And what would be your recommendation for accompanying events? We have a lot of stuff prepared for our audience.

[Carol] I can't deny that Kleber Mendonça's films always catch my attention, as he's a filmmaker I admire a lot and have always kept up with his work. And Barren Lives ("Vidas Secas"), of course, a classic of both national cinema and literature. I'm very clumsy when it comes to samba, so naturally, events like the Brazilian food and coffee tastings pique my interest more. And the quiz is going to be a lot of fun too!

[Adilson] And finally, what is your expectation with the festival? What would make you happy and satisfied with all our work at the end of this year’s edition of the festival?

[Carol] I feel that we're in a part of the world where there's still very little knowledge about Brazil, so initiatives like these are important for promoting cultural awareness. I hope to see screenings and events packed not only with Brazilians longing for a taste of home but also with Czechs and people from other nationalities, learning more about my country and enjoying everything we've planned for the festival!
