THIS IS BALLROOM
The documentary, full of dance and music, takes place in Rio de Janeiro and its surroundings. It is a great choice for everyone — whether to warm up before a Friday party or simply to enjoy oneself. Young queer people of color create here their authentic version of ballroom culture, which originated fifty years ago in New York. With a playful rhythm, typical of Brazil, the film portrays the structure of the “ball,” its categories, and judging. All dance and performance presentations are visually striking and have musicality so refined that they completely immerse the viewer in the atmosphere of the event. The dance creations are intertwined with confessions of those who found refuge in this environment against a hostile world that marginalizes them.

Both Juru and Vitã are part of the ballroom movement in Rio de Janeiro, as is most of the film’s team.
