The Prague premiere of the latest film by Kleber Mendonça Filho, who this year received the rare honor at Cannes of winning two awards — for Best Director and Best Actor. We are in northeastern Brazil in 1977, and Wagner Moura (known for his leading role in Elite Squad and the series Narcos) plays a technology expert on the run from the grasp of the military dictatorship and the mobsters of a corrupt corporation from the country’s south. He arrives in Recife during Carnival week, hoping to reunite with his son. But he soon discovers that nothing will be simple. This multifaceted film blending multiple genres is a disturbing critique of Brazilian inequality and injustice, filled with suspense, comic moments, and absurd humor. It rediscovers the lost memory of history while drawing clear parallels with the current situation.

Mendonça filmed digitally using old cameras to create a high-contrast, widescreen look typical of that era’s films.
