MANAS
Marajó Island, Amazon rainforest, present day. The thirteen-year-old girl Tielle lives on the riverbanks with her father, mother, and three siblings. Influenced by her mother’s words, she idolizes her older sister, who supposedly escaped the harsh reality by “finding a good man” on the ships passing through the region. As Tielle grows up, her idealized visions begin to crumble. She increasingly fears the dark future that awaits her and her younger sister, and decides to confront the oppressive system that dominates her family and the women of the entire community. Director Marianna Brennand sensitively and deeply reveals the hidden world behind the closed doors of the huts and merchant ship cabins. The camera faithfully portrays life in humble northern Brazil and, through precise performances, exposes what everyone keeps silent about and pretends not to see.
Trivia:
The fictional story is based on real events. The project to produce Manas started in 2014, and director Marianna Brennand researched for over 10 years the life and violence surrounding girls on Marajó Island.
