THE BURITÍ FLOWER

The Burití Flower follows the last 80 years in the lives of the Krahô tribe members in the Brazilian state of Tocantins. It captures events starting from the massacre that occurred in 1940, committed by two farmers from the region, which resulted in the death of dozens of indigenous people. The film explores how this violence continues to resonate in the memory of new generations. It blends a documentary approach with poetic elements and emphasizes current pressing issues faced by indigenous peoples in Brazil, particularly the attacks by agribusiness on their territories. The film is the work of Portuguese director João Salaviza and Brazilian director Renée Nader Messora, who have been in regular contact with Krahô tribe and who dedicated themselves to the issues of the Krahô community for many years, as seen in their previous film, which was awarded at Cannes. This film also captivated the audience at this year's Cannes, receiving a ten-minute applause and earning the creators an award in the Un Certain Regard category. The Krahô themselves contributed to the script, incorporating not only scenes depicting the injustices they face and their determination to resist but also the worldview of their ancestors.

The screening will be followed by an introduction to the topic of the position of Indians in Brazilian society led by expert Šárka Grauová.
