PORTRAIT OF A CERTAIN ORIENT
Lebanon, 1949. The country faces an imminent war. Two Catholic siblings Emilie and Emir, embark on a trip to Brazil seeking better days. During the journey, Emilie falls in love with a Muslim merchant, Omar. Emir succumbs to uncontrollable jealousy and uses their religious differences to drive them apart.
Short of reaching their final destination, Emir is seriously wounded in a gun accident during a confrontation with Omar. Emilie's only option is to descend into an indigenous village in the middle of the jungle to find a healer to save him.
When her brother recovers, they head to Manaus, where Emilie makes a decision that will lead to tragic consequences. Portrait of a Certain Orient is a film about memory, passion, and prejudice that unveils the saga of Lebanese immigrants in the North of Brazil.
Curiosity: did you know that this movie is based on the book “Relato de um certo Oriente” (“Tale of a certain Orient”), by Amazonian, Brazilian writer Milton Hatoum, who also wrote the short-story “O Adeus do Comandante” (“The Commander's Farewell”), that itself inspired the screenplay for the movie “Rio do Desejo” (“River of Desire”), which we brought you at last year’s Kino Brasil festival?
